Automation and trusted places

Turn on automation once and the alarms arm themselves when you plug in, connect earphones or put the phone in a pocket. Save your home, office and gym as trusted places, and they stay quiet there.

Backpacker walking through busy city traffic with buses and scooters

An alarm you forget to arm protects nothing. Automation takes the remembering away. With the three switches on, Alert24 arms the charger removal alarm every time you plug in, the earphone removal alarm every time you connect wired earphones, and the anti-pickpocket alarm when the phone is in a pocket and you are walking.

The other half is knowing when not to shout. Unplugging your own phone in your own kitchen should not set off a siren. So you tell Alert24 where you feel safe, and automation stays quiet there. Both parts are free.

What auto-activation arms, and when

Open the automation panel from the dashboard and switch on the alarms you want. The card for that alarm then shows Auto Activated instead of the Activate button.

  • Charger removal on plug-in

The moment the charger connects, the alarm arms. Unplug the phone outside a trusted place and the pre-alarm beep starts, then the siren.

  • Earphone removal on connect

Arms when wired or USB earphones are plugged in. Bluetooth earphones are not covered, so the alarm does not fire when a Bluetooth headset disconnects.

  • Pickpocket when in pocket and walking

Uses the proximity sensor and step detection. When the phone is covered in a pocket and you are moving, it arms; when it is pulled out, the alarm goes off. Android 10 and later asks for the physical activity permission.

Trusted places: 20 metres around home, work, gym

In Settings, open Trusted Locations and tap the plus button. The app takes your current position and asks for a name; Home and Work are suggested. Save it, and whenever the phone is within about 20 metres of that spot, automation-armed charger and earphone alarms do not fire. Each place has its own switch, so you can turn one off for a day without deleting it.

Trusted places are saved on the phone only. They are not uploaded to your account and are not visible on the web. They also need the location permission; without it, Alert24 cannot tell where the phone is and treats every place as untrusted.

  • Add a place while you are standing there; the app uses your position at that moment.
  • Switch a place off or delete it from the same list.
  • Location accuracy varies indoors, so a large building may need a place saved near the door.

Safe Wi-Fi networks

Every time you stop an alarm with your passcode, Alert24 offers to save the place as a safe area. Choosing it links the Wi-Fi network you are connected to, so the next time the phone is on that network, automation stays quiet. It is a fast way to add the office or a friend's house without opening Settings.

Safe Wi-Fi and trusted places work together. If either matches, automation-armed alarms are paused.

Pause for 30 minutes

Sometimes you are somewhere new, unplugging and re-plugging a lot, and you do not want to save the place. The same dialog that appears after you stop an alarm has a pause option. Choose it and automation stays quiet for the next 30 minutes, then goes back to normal by itself.

Set up automation in two minutes

  1. 1

    Save your first trusted place

At home, open Settings, then Trusted Locations, tap the plus button, keep the name Home and save.

  2. 2

    Turn on the automation switches

Back on the dashboard, open the automation panel and switch on charger, earphone and pickpocket. Allow the physical activity permission if Android asks.

  3. 3

Answer the "save this location?" prompt

The first time an alarm auto-arms somewhere new, Alert24 asks whether to save the place. Say yes at your desk or the gym, no at the café.

  4. 4

    Adjust the pre-alarm beep

In Settings, Pre Alarm Beep Settings sets how many seconds the beep plays before the siren. Unlocking the phone during the beep cancels the alarm, which gives you time when it was your own hand.

Frequently asked questions

Does automation drain the battery?

The charger and earphone triggers cost almost nothing; they only react to plug events. Pickpocket automation keeps the proximity sensor and step detector active, which uses a little more. The trusted-place check reads the location about every 10 seconds while automation is on.

Can I use trusted places without automation?

You can save them, but they only affect alarms armed by automation. Alarms you activate by hand fire everywhere.

Why did the alarm fire at home?

Check that the Home place is switched on, that location permission is granted, and that the phone had a location fix. Indoors, the position can drift by more than 20 metres. Saving your home Wi-Fi as a safe area is a reliable backup.

Does the pickpocket automation work with Bluetooth earphones or a smartwatch?

Pickpocket automation does not depend on earphones; it uses the proximity sensor and walking detection. The earphone alarm covers wired and USB earphones only.
