How pocket detection works
Every Android phone has a proximity sensor next to the earpiece. It is the sensor that turns the screen off when you hold the phone to your ear. Inside a pocket or a bag the sensor is covered. When the phone is pulled out, the sensor is suddenly uncovered.
Alert24 watches for exactly that change: covered, then uncovered. When it happens while the alarm is armed, the app plays a warning beep and then rings the siren. Because the trigger is the pocket itself, there is nothing to press and nothing to remember once the phone is put away.
- No camera, no GPS and no internet are used for detection
- Works in a jacket pocket, trouser pocket or a closed bag
- The siren goes off where the thief is, not later at home
How to arm the anti-pickpocket alarm by hand
Use this before a crowded stretch, such as a packed metro ride or a market. The alarm is one-shot: after it fires, arm it again.
- 1
Open the Anti-Pick Pocket tab
It is the third tab on the Alert24 dashboard. Switch Flash and Vibrate on if you want more than sound.
- 2
Tap Activate and put the phone in your pocket
A 10-second countdown runs. Slide the phone into your pocket or bag before it reaches zero so the sensor is covered when the alarm arms.
- 3
Leave it there
A notification shows that the pick-pocket alarm is running. The next time the phone comes out of the pocket, the beep starts.
- 4
Taking it out yourself
Unlock the phone during the warning beep and the alarm is cancelled. If the siren has started, enter your PIN, pattern, knock code or fingerprint on the alarm screen.
Let automation watch your pocket all day
Arming by hand is fine for one trip. For daily commuting, switch on the pick-pocket alarm in the Automation panel on the dashboard (the automation icon at the top). The tab then shows Auto Activated, and the app keeps watching in the background. Whenever the phone has been covered in a pocket for a couple of seconds and is then pulled out, the alarm fires.
To avoid alarms every time you check your phone, automation stays quiet in your trusted places, on a saved safe Wi-Fi network, and for 30 minutes after you choose pause on the alarm screen. When the alarm arms somewhere new, Alert24 offers to save that spot as a trusted place. Read more on the trusted places and auto-arm page.
Quiet during calls and in trusted places
When you answer a call, the phone goes to your ear and covers the sensor. Then you lower it and the sensor is uncovered again. That would look like a pocket exit, so Alert24 does not raise the alarm while you are on a call. On Android 12 and later it also ignores the sensor while the phone is ringing, if you allowed the phone permission.
A trusted place works the same way for automatic arming: at home or at your desk, a pocket exit is normal and no alarm sounds. An alarm you armed by hand still rings everywhere, because you asked for it.
What happens when it fires
The same alarm flow as every other Alert24 alarm, so you always know what to expect.
Beep
A warning beep plays for 5 seconds by default. You can shorten it in Settings under Pre Alarm Beep Settings.
Siren
A full-screen alarm appears and the siren rings at maximum volume, with flash and vibration if enabled, for up to 5 minutes.
Selfie
The front camera takes a photo as the alarm starts. It is labelled Anti-Pick-Pocket in your intruder gallery.
PIN to stop
Only your secret stops it. Volume keys cannot take the siren below 60% of maximum.

Anti-pickpocket alarm: questions
Does the pickpocket alarm work without internet?
Yes. Detection uses the proximity sensor only. No data connection is needed to arm it, trigger it or stop it.
Will it go off when I take my own phone out?
If it is armed, yes, that is the point. Unlock the phone during the 5-second beep and it cancels. With automation, save home and work as trusted places so it stays quiet there.
Does it work in a bag as well as a pocket?
Yes, as long as the bag covers the sensor. A closed bag or a phone pocket inside a bag works; a phone lying face up in an open tote may not.
Which permissions does it need?
Display over other apps for the alarm screen, camera for the selfie, and on newer Android versions the physical activity permission for automation. Location is optional and only used for trusted places and the address on photos. See permissions explained.
Is the anti-pickpocket alarm free?
Yes, including automation and trusted places. The free version shows ads; Premium removes them.
